Dare you?
One sunny day, my boss asked me to “fire” an administrative officer. The person is very kind, gentle and beautiful but unfortunately his performance is below average. The brightness of the day immediately turned a little dark gray like a high school uniform. “Firing” is not an easy matter in any part of the world. Have you ever watched the movie “Up in The Air”? How can a tear that gets fired can be a tear that gets fired too.
This story is not about tears, but about my smug smile (albeit to myself) a few years later. Arrogant when I heard about the days of dismissal efforts including his persuasions, it turned out that the administrative staff’s first step was to become a successful entrepreneur in his field today.
I know I don’t deserve to be arrogant, because his success now is the result of his work, not an easy thing to achieve, but his courage to accept the fact that he did not “sell” in the field of work at that time was a big first step. I could feel her pain, her sense of abandonment, radiating from all her questions and actions toward me.
So you, yes you, as an employee or entrepreneur, have you ever had a question, how come I was never promoted? Why is my salary increase smaller than other colleagues? Why was the project given to him, not me?
During 24 years as a human capital practitioner, people who are less successful are people who wrestle only at the question level, ask questions (often confide in) to friends, to superiors, even to trade unions. Meanwhile, people who are successful will usually ask questions, but are more “mirrored” and even then take courageous actions to change professions, or if not, change themselves.
Changing yourself takes courage. There is a sense of discomfort in acknowledging your own shortcomings and changing. That discomfort can be really, really annoying. The proof is that there are many people who cannot change for the better?
Dare you do it? Do what? Yes, look in the mirror, are you on the right track?
